The property was awarded its grade II Listed status in 1972 but was rebuilt, apart from the façade, as part of a £3.5m redevelopment in 1985 after lying empty for more than a decade. The scheme provided 48,000 sq ft of office space, as well a 10,300 sq ft of retail space at the ground floor and was completed in 1987.
The Developer lodged the listed building consent application detailing its proposed change of use from offices into 152 student beds, as well as internal partitioning work and external alterations, in April 2015.
This new building conversion boasts self-contained studios with a total of 172 bed spaces available throughout with a private gym, on-site cinema, games room, communal lounge and work rooms.
The Design and Build refurbishment Contract was awarded to a Contractor in November 2016. The project was extremely complicated due to operating and access limitations as well as due to the nature of the existing building. buildfifty5 were commissioned to support and lead the contractor through the latter stages of the project and to overcome operational issues.
